Junior Sunbowl, 2pm

Eastside Ravens vs Browns Plains Bears

Both teams had to battle hard to earn their spot in the big game, and now neither team will be ready to surrender their chance at the title. Eastside needed overtime to take care of the Spartans and will look to finetune and get healthy in the lead up to the Sunbowl. WR Jordan Seeto proved why he is as valuable a player as any in the junior competition, with a receiving TD and a punt return score. It will be the Ravens defense that will be challenged by the Bears, whose outside run game and misdirection killed the Bayside teams hopes last week. Both teams scored on special teams in their playoff wins and they could again play a factor in this contest. The Bears will need to pressure Ravens QB Phil Cottis to disrupt their offensive rhythm and the Eastside linebackers must ensure they keep contain to force the Bears offense back into the teeth of the 'd'. This should be a fitting finale to what has been a great season of junior football.

Senior Sunbowl XXV, 4:30pm

Gold Coast Stingrays vs Kenmore Bears

The Stingrays had to earn their chance at title defense, with the Cougars pushing them hard to the end. The Bears needed a blocked PAT to seal their 22-21 win over the Ravens and will hope to ride the momentum to a Sunbowl shot. QB Jared Stegman was again crucial for the Bears, his legs one of the deciding factors in their playoff berth, but overseas commitments will see the Bears without their biggest weapon come Sunbowl. Can the Bears muster enough offense without him? The Stingrays offense were challenged by the Cougars, but if on song, might be too much for the Bears defense, especially without the offensive firepower to control the tempo of the game. They have made it this far undefeated, and the Stingrays will be favourites to make it another Sunbowl title, but the tenacity of the Bears should nake them earn it.

8 November 2009 Playoff Round Previews
Juniors

12pm. Eastside Ravens (1) vs Sunshine Coast Spartans (4)

The Spartans made it into the playoffs the unconventional way, but their late season form definitely warrants the playoff berth. The Spartans are sure to be underdogs here, but boast the only win over the Eastside team this year, something the Ravens boys will be keen to erase with a playoff victory. Eastside offense will be tough to contain for the Spartans, with so many options for QB Phil Cottis to choose in the passing game, and a strong ground game featuring state RB Jameson Clifton. The Spartans have their share of athletes and they will need to take advantage in all phases of play, needing big offensive, defensive and special teams plays to stick with the Ravens in this meeting. Eastside will be favourites to head to the Sunbowl, but don t expect the Spartans boys to go down without a fight.

2pm. Browns Plains Bears (2) vs Bayside Ravens (3)

These teams have a win apiece from their regular season games, and both were ultra-tight encounters. Expect another hard-fought one again as the playoff intensity increases. The Ravens task will be shutting down the Bears run game which allowed them to control the tempo of the last meeting. With Australian TE Sam Johannessen also in the mix, it will be the Ravens defense that will determine the Bayside hopes. Expect the Ravens to use the versatile Dom Gallagher all over the field to give matchup problems for the Bears with his height, size and speed combination. Bears LB Chris Popa will be tasked with leading the Bears defense to support their offensive output. Turnovers were critical in both of the previous two games, so expect them to again be pivotal. Too close to call, so this writer will take his splinters from sitting on the fence.

Seniors

4pm. Gold Coast Stingrays (1) vs Western Cougars (4)

If any team has a history of knowing how to beat the Stingrays, it is the Cougars. But plenty of water has gone under the bridge since the glory days of the Ipswich Cougars, now rebadged and coloured as the Western Cougars. The Cougars came within a point of snatching 3rd place, but despite the loss, carry some impressive recent form into their playoff matchup. Stingrays made it through the season undefeated and will be favourites to return to the Sunbowl here. The Rays will need to mindful of the Cougars tenacity, with plenty of current Cougars part of the Cougars dominant run in the early 2000s. The Cougars use an attacking defense to swarm on the run game and pressure the QB, and will have to ensure they get their hands on QB Kyle Low to limit their offense. Jeff Moate is a mountain with legs in the backfield and anchors their ground game. Offensively for the Cougars they will be hoping to spring Michael Zammit on the ground and get the ball to WR Anthony Dabelstein through the air. But with a Stingrays defense that has only surrendered 45 points all year long, it won t be an easy task. It should be a fitting playoff showdown in this one.

7pm. Brisbane Ravens (2) vs Kenmore Bears (3)

These two teams played a tight 12-8 game in Toowoomba about a month ago, with the Ravens coming out on top. But this is the playoffs, and all bets are off. Jared Stegman has had an MVP calibre season for the Bears in his senior rookie year, guiding the Bears passing game and proving a handful when running from the pocket. Keeping Stegman as a passer only will be the challenge for the Ravens, their defensive backs sure to be tested all night. Offensively for the Ravens there is speed to burn in the WR corps and with a stout ground game to help control the tempo, the Ravens need to ensure they are efficient and effective to keep the dangerous bears offense off the field. Special teams helped the Ravens to victory last meeting, with KR Ryan Kelly scoring the game-winning TD. This is sure to be a high-scoring and fast-paced game which should provide plenty for both teams supporters to enjoy.

2 November 2009 Final Round Preview - An Overview
As both divisions conclude their regular season this weekend, the competition ladders are all but confirmed. Congratulations to Gold Coast Stingrays (Seniors) and Eastside Ravens (Juniors) for securing the minor premierships after what has been the most competitive season in recent memory.

The key matchup with finals implications will be the senior game between the Cougars and Bears at Wacol. A Bears win confirms their position in 3rd place, but a Cougars victory would give the Cougars 3rd place.

4th place in the junior ranks is technically on the line, with a Spartans win over Kenmore Bears giving them a playoff position in their maiden year on the back of a great late-season push. An upset win by Kenmore over the Spartans and Rhinos over Browns Plains would see the Rhinos slip into the 4th spot.

There will be plenty of pride on the line in the other contests, the Bruins keen to finish their first year with an upset of the Stingrays and the Spartans looking to head into the off-season on an upswing with a win over the Ravens.

It has been a great season on the Gridiron so far and Round 12 should provide just a tease of the big games ahead come finals time.

Bruins v Wildcats

The Wildcats need plenty of help to sneak into the playoffs, but first of all they need to take care of their own business with a win over the Bruins. After a forfeit and bye week, hopefully the Bruins have mustered their troops to give a good contest here, the local derby should provide another hard-hitting affair. Last meeting the Wildcats just got home and will be hoping to execute at their best to take the points from the Bruins. The Bruins will need to sustain some offense, using their power run game to try to keep the Cats attack off the field. Wildcats, with their season on the line, should get the points here.

Spartans v Rhinos

The Rhinos should be too much for the Spartans to handle this weekend, the northsiders travelling to the Sunshine Coast for their last game of the season. After putting up a good performance against the Ravens, the Rhinos will be intent on finishing in good fashion and their strong running game should be enough to wrap this one up. The Spartans have shown spark and played hard this year, and in using their final games for the year to build towards 2010, should get plenty of benefit. A Rhinos win here is the clear prediction, but the Spartans will give a good account of themselves.

Cougars vs Wolves

The Cougars know that a win here will book them a finals spot and unfortunately for the Wolves, that means a hungry Cougars lineup. The Cougars came out on top last meeting in Toowoomba and will be not about to let there be a reversal here. The steep learning curve continues for the Wolves, but with the continued positive attitude should yield positive results for 2010 for the Toowoomba lads. The Cougars offense will look to hit their stride as they prepare for a playoff spot and a likely meeting with the Stingrays, although the Ipswich boys may have their sights set on a 3rd place finish with a last round game against the Bears. But in this game, the Cougars are clear favourites and should take the points comfortably.

Juniors

Eastside Ravens vs Kenmore Bears

The Eastside capabilities were on full display last round against their clubmates and with that sort of form, have their sights set on a Sunbowl. Against a Kenmore team that has refused to give in all year, the Ravens will look to continue some momentum, but take the chance to work some depth and experiment ahead of its postseason run. This game will also contribute to the "Fur vs Feathers" trophy calculations, but the result should be comfortably in Eastside's favour.

Browns Plains Bears vs Bayside Ravens

Another playoff warmup for these two teams who are headed for the post-season. Both teams will be wanting to set a positive tone for this finals effort and a good showing here will set them on this path. Last meeting this contest was an 8-6 defensive struggle, but don't be surprised to see plenty of offense this time around, both teams lineups making progress in this part of the game. This one could go either way and the attitude and frame of mind on gameday will likely decide this one.

Spartans vs Wildcats

It was only a couple of weeks ago that the Spartans knocked off the Wildcats, and now, having hit their straps, the Spartans will enter as favourites here. The Wildcats will be playing for pride and keen to square the ledger. The outside speed of the Spartans has been a big factor in their rise, along with a physical defense. The Cats have their own speed, but may not have the muscle to match it with the Spartans upfront. It should be a fast-flowing game with the playbooks emptied in the chase for competition points.

Rhinos vs Stingrays

A Rhinos lineup that looked like a playoff team has been edged out the last few weeks and now seem destined to miss the postseason. The Stingrays have had their own hurdles to overcome but will be focused on securing the win and building their Sunbowl title defense to full speed. This was last season's Sunbowl matchup, but now, it will serve as just another hard-fought regular season contest, with the Stingrays still having too many key players for the Rhinos to overcome.

Stingrays vs Wildcats

With the minor premiership in hand, the Stingrays will now look to polish their game ahead of the finals with some playoff-type intensity against the Wildcats. The Wildcats are in a fierce battle for the final playoff berth and a loss here would almost certainly see those hopes fade. With everything on the line for the Wildcats the Stingrays will expect a strong opposition at home at Runaway Bay and likely relish the chance to show their strength. The Wildcats will need to find away to limit the Stingrays offense because you would always tip the Stingrays in a shootout. With the Stingrays boasting a tough defense to boot, the path to the playoffs is a rocky one for the 'Cats. Stingrays should take the money, but not without a challenge.

Ravens v Rhinos

Plenty of history between these clubs as they both entered the league together in 2001, and this history is represented with the annual showdown for the Gateway Trophy. The Rhinos are the current holders and even if playoff hopes are all but gone, they would delight in keeping it from their Bayside rivals. The Ravens got an unexpected week off last round and will hope to be refreshed ahead of their home clash with the Rhinos. They will be keen to get into playoff form ahead of their finals appearance, a second place ladder finish secured. For possibly the first time in the history of the rivalry, the Ravens will enter as favourites, how will they respond to this tag?

Bears vs Wolves

After a week to heal and build, the Wolves will find yet another difficult test in the playoff-bound Bears. The Bears had too much on both sides of the ball during their last meeting, the Wolves defense not having any answers to the firepower of the Bears passing game. But, as has become their trademark, the Wolves will certainly fight it out to the end, learning important lessons in their first year in the competition. The final couple of games this year for the Wolves will be more about building for 2010 than purely for this year. For the Bears, the game will represent a chance to experiment with schemes and personnel ahead of the playoffs and to hone what has been a strong unit all year long.

Juniors

Eastside Ravens vs Bayside Ravens

You couldn't have picked a 36-all draw, which was the last result of their intra-club contest, and now we get a second look at Ravens vs Ravens. Both teams look headed for the playoffs and there may be a third meeting in the post-season on the cards. Don't expect either team hold back in this friendly-rivalry, both keen to take the inaugural "Cage Rage" series and collect bragging rights. Last meeting it was all about offense, with the Bayside offense pulling out one of their best performances of the season to match the Eastside attack. This time it will be a chance for the defenses to show their mettle in what should be entertaining game on home turf. Is it a cop-out to tip another draw here?

Stingrays vs Kenmore Bears

Kenmore were unlucky not to get the win over the Wildcats last start, but will have a hard time this week against a seasoned Stingrays team. The Rays had to fight to the last whistle to get by the Browns Plains Bears last week so will be keen to return to their explosive best this week. Much like the Wolves in the seniors, Kenmore carry the title of "no-quit" in junior ranks, not letting their undersized squad take a backward step or show a lack of heart, an admirably quality for a junior team to possess. Stingrays will enter the contest as the clear-cut favourites, and no upset looks likely here, but expect Kenmore to give it their all.

Spartans vs Rhinos

If only the season were a bit longer, we might just see the Spartans challenge the competition, their improving team using its good athletes to full effect over recent weeks. Australian representative Paget Foerster now has some talented teammates to take on some of the workload and they will be a handful for the Rhinos. The Rhinos haven't been able to put the whole game together in recent weeks and will need a consistent effort here to take the points. Both teams have some impressive athletes and it wouldn't surprise to see this game feature multiple special teams scores and be one of the more exciting games of the late-season.

Browns Plains Bears vs Wildcats

The Bears are playoff-bound, but the Wildcats will be spectators this year during the post-season. With nothing to lose, expect the Wildcats to throw everything at the Bears. The Bears almost snatched victory over the Stingrays, a penalty on a game-tying TD pass seeing them finish on the wrong side of the scoreline, but it will be seen as a big positive for them ahead of the finals. Defensively the Bears have made good strides in the past few weeks and with an offense featuring some weapons, the Wildcats will have a tough task of playing the spoiler. Bears should come away with the win here to move towards the finals.

Stingrays vs Spartans

Coast v Coast with the Gold Coasters making the long trek north to take on the Spartans. Stingrays enter every game as hot favourites and there will be no exceptions here as they face an improving Spartans team. The Spartans defense plays a tough style of defense and will have to be at their best to limit the Stingrays offense. Nobody stops the Stingrays offense, it is all about limiting the carnage. Without a consistent offensive output it will be even tougher for the Spartans to compete with the Rays who match their attack with an equally tough defense. Look for the Stingrays to use this game to give some opportunities to their depth players ahead of the playoffs.

Wildcats vs Cougars

Playoff positions are on the line and every game counts from here on in for the Wildcats and Cougars. Both teams are on a roll and are competing for one of the available two playoff spots. A loss here will deal a huge blow to the aspirations of one team and a win will be even more valuable for the other. The Wildcats offense matches up quite well with the Cougars, provided they can give enough protection for the QB against a likely all-out rush by the Cougars. The Cougars offense used the spark of the ground game with Michael Zammit and WR Anthony Dabelstein who had a strong game last start, however, turnovers were a problem, and that was the Wolves, not the Wildcats and their traditionally tough defense. Too close to call, but this game should have a playoff feel to it.

Rhinos vs Bears

Another game packing a playoff punch, the Bears close loss to the Ravens has them with some work to do to sew up a finals berth. The Rhinos have their own finals agenda and will be keen to put that to work against the Bears. Shutting down the dual threat of Bears QB Jared Stegman will be the big challenge for the Rhinos. On the other side, the Bears will have to muscle up against the run game of the Rhinos, who use it effectively to control the clock and tempo of the game. A loss by the Rhinos here would deal a harsh blow to their quest for a Sunbowl return, whilst for the Bears a loss would make the playoff road even tougher. I am tipping a close Bears win on the back of their offensive execution.

Ravens vs Bruins

The Ravens have booked themselves a finals spot after their tight win over the Bears last weekend in Toowoomba and will look to generate some consistency on offense this weekend. The Bruins made a good fist of their local derby with the Wildcats and will surely want to get a win here to play spoiler. The Bruins will work to ensure that the Ravens offense has to earn every inch and their offense has shown a number of variations over the past month to give them options in moving the ball themselves. Despite have positions on opposing ends of the competition ladder, expect this one to be a tight one.

Juniors

Eastside Ravens vs Rhinos

It was a wakeup call for the Eastside boys last start, letting the absence of key defenders throw out their whole rhythm as they were outdone by the new-look Spartans. Perhaps the awakening comes at the wrong time for the Rhinos whose loss to Bayside last week has dented their playoff hopes. Scott Lehmann remains a one man scoring band for the Rhinos, but without their regular QB, the Rhinos will need to be creative finding ways to get him the ball. Containing the Eastside offense will be a tough task for the Rhinos. Lehmann his role as a DB will likely get the matchup against Eastside's Jordan Seeto, but that could open opportunities for the other targets in the Ravens passing game. Look for Eastside to return to the winners circle here.

Wildcats vs Kenmore Bears

Nobody wants the wooden spoon, least of all the Wildcats who had higher hopes for the season, but this game could well play a role in deciding its fate. Kenmore are yet to notch a win this season and will have their hands full with the Wildcats who will be playing for pride in a disappointing year for the Cats. The Wildcats have some good playmakers on offense and this could prove too much for the undermanned Bears to cope with on defense. The Bears offense has worked tirelessly this season with little reward, but there are some sparks that could give them a chance to take the points and cause a little upset. Special teams play could be the game-changer here, but the Wildcats go in as the tip to take the win.

Spartans vs Bayside Ravens

The Spartans are the owners of back-to-back wins and now have some offensive weapons to match it with the league's best. These will be on display in their second home game against Bayside Ravens. The two teams met only a few weeks ago, and although Bayside took the points, it was in this game that the Spartans upswing began. Bayside are focused on securing a playoff spot, so need to be careful not to look beyond the Spartans who already sprung an upset of their Ravens brethren last start. The Bayside defense has been the big improver in recent weeks and with a full complement of players back, will be looking to hit their stride at the right time. All-purpose player Dom Gallagher has been a standout for the Ravens in recent weeks and will surely be in their plans on both sides of the ball. Bayside as favourites here, but a lot closer than you would have thought.

Stingrays vs Browns Plains Bears

Both teams look set for the post-season, so this provides a good tuneup for both teams in a playoff-intensity meeting. Stingrays outscored the Bears last time they met, albeit with some extra assistance, and will be a big handful for the Browns Plains team, who we haven't really seen the best of yet. Will it be this game that brings it out of the Bears lineup? The Bears defense will be called upon to ensure that the Stingrays can't settle into a rhythm, forcing the Stingrays to utilise both the run and pass. On offense for the Bears, controlling the line of scrimmage will be vital to give them point-scoring chances and not let the Rays dictate terms. Stingrays get the nod for the points, but it is not beyond the Bears.

Cougars v Wolves

The Cougars have been on a big upswing lately and their last start win over the Rhinos will have them full of confidence for their trip up the range to tackle Toowoomba. The Wolves haven't given up through their streak of big defeats, but unfortunately they face a Cougars team with a sniff of finals football. The yellow and black defense will make any offensive production tough for the Wolves, and with a strong ground game and some weapons in the passing game, the Cougars should prove too much, despite the homefield advantage, for Toowoomba. Notable over the past week has been the resilience of the Toowoomba team, going through the typical first-year growing pains, but continuing to fight on. Cougars should take the points here.

Spartans v Rhinos

The ever-improving Spartans take on a stinging Rhinos team at Daisy Hill, with the Rhinos keen to take their first win since Round 3. The Spartans have made clear progress in their first year, some good athletes and a physical style giving their opponents plenty to worry about as they come together and see the rookie development. Perhaps not quite ready to take victory away from the Rhinos, the Spartans, including a handful of former Rhinos, will be sure to make the Rhinos earn every yard. The Rhinos will be focused on getting back on track for their finals campaign, coming through a sticky part of the draw and needing to use their experience and tried and tested gameplay of tough defense and a strong running game. This should be win number 3 for the Rhinos this season, but not without a challenge from the Spartans.

Bears v Ravens

An early playoff-preview for both teams as the 2nd and 3rd place teams square-off. Both teams have been surprise packets this year with their new-blood and changed-up schemes yielding good results to this point. Now, a true test for both teams, one that if form plays true could be revisited come playoff time. Defending the Bears passing game will be the Ravens number one priority, needing to ensure a pass-rush limits the time for Jared Stegman to find his targets. The Ravens run-game has been their bread and butter this season and will again be relied on to move the chains. These teams have a history of close games, and this contest also marks the senior instalment of their annual "Knight-Farrar 'Fur vs Feathers' Shield" which will add further to what should be an entertaining and close matchup. A result either way wouldn't surprise here in the match of the round.

Wildcats v Bruins

The Bruins have inherited the local derby with the Wildcats once the domain of their clubmates the Bears. There is sure to be no let-up in the intensity of the rivalry between the neighbouring teams, the rising Wildcats looking to out-execute and outmuscle the Bruins. The Wildcats passing game poses many threats to a Bruins team that has proven vulnerable to an air attack, with the big challenge for the Bruins being the ability to generate consistent offense. The Wildcats have their own punishing defense that they certainly won't take easy on the Bruins who will look to hit hard and test the Cats. The Cats are going well at the right stage of the season and probably won't be ready to let the Bruins upend their playoff push.

Juniors

Browns Plains Bears vs Kenmore Bears

The second Friday night meeting between clubmates should again go down as a Browns Plains win, but the Kenmore team have yet to be disgraced despite battling through undermanned. Kenmore made the crosstown Bears work for the points in their earlier meeting, and it should again be the case as Friday night football returns to Grosvenor Park. As with last week's Ravens v Ravens game, it should be another showcase for a strong junior program and one that won't be taken lightly by anyone involved. Browns Plains will be hoping to develop some consistency on offense to help steer them towards a playoff berth, Kenmore will look to use this to further build and show what some grit and determination is worth on the field.

Spartans vs Eastside Ravens

The Spartans got their first win of the season last start and now face a matchup with an Eastside team keen to show their focus after almost losing their first game of the season in taking part points with the Bayside team. Eastside's offense remains tough to defend with the dual threat of the ground and passing games. The Sunshine Coast offense has shown some spark of late and this team will not closely resemble the one that the Ravens came up against in Round 3. If they can use their new speed weapons effectively, the Ravens will have to work hard to halt the Spartans offense. Ultimately, the Spartans will have trouble containing the Ravens offense and will need some production of their own to ensure it isn't a blowout.

Stingrays vs Wildcats

The Rays got an unexpected week-off to refocus after their first loss of the season and now it will be the Wildcats in their sight as the Stingrays look to march towards the playoffs. It hasn't been the happiest time for the Wildcats juniors this year, but there are enough playmakers to ensure the Stingrays have to earn the points. Stingrays QB Joshua Sing has shown what difference it can make having a strong supporting cast after spending last year with the Rays Manta team, now helping lead the top Stingrays team as they look to make it a fifth title. The Wildcats will be needing to find ways to keep the pressure off QB Calvin Pickers who had sky blue in his face constantly in their Round 2 meeting. Stingrays should take the points here.

Bayside Ravens vs Rhinos

The Rhinos got the points in their Round 2 meeting on the back of an opportunistic defense and special teams play, and in this game, playoff positions are on the line. Bayside come off a top offensive performance going toe-to-toe with their clubmates Eastside and will look to keep this offensive momentum going. They will need to show that their defense has improved against a Rhinos offense that has playmakers and timely playcalling to catch their opponents napping. Both teams will be travelling up the range to Toowoomba for this meeting, with the winning team helping themselves towards securing a playoff shot and the losing team facing an uphill battle. It should be a hard-fought contest that neither team is willing to handover.
